After doing some research and listening to a trainer, that I’ve grown to respected professionally, named Jason Ferruggia I started to realize that maybe choosing to stop consuming dairy wouldn’t be the end of the world. Over the past few months I’ve been having a lot of adverse reactions to dairy consumption especially cheese and whey protein.
Now I come from a family where southern cooking is the norm, and drenching everything in cheese is everyday living. And with my frequent training, whey protein had become a main staple for me. But I noticed that over the years I started to experience episodes of cramping that left me bent over and sometimes even dropping me to my knees. I was always told that it was something else going on with me and that I may have some type of “disease”.
After I read this article by Ferruggia, I chose to cut out most dairy from my diet because I was at “dis-ease” internally. I noticed that at times I still felt and looked “puffy and swollen” while I would still get one of my “cramping episodes” once a week. Even though I cut out milk I was still using whey protein and eating a little cheese. Call me stubborn, but I had a 28+ year ingrained belief pattern that I needed cheese, not to mention if I strength trained then whey protein was a must.
So for the past 12 weeks I’ve been dairy free and I feel like a different person. I haven’t gotten sick or had any type of congestion at all (which was the norm) and I’ve not had a “cramping episode” since. I also found another cow’s milk alternative that I swear by and its coconut milk.
Coconut milk is made from the meat of the coconut and has been consumed for years by people who inhabit tropical lands along with a lot of eastern European countries as well. This is the brand that I like the most.
Coconut contains a high concentration of medium chain fatty acids (M.C.F.As), or medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) as they are called by the nutrition community. MCTs serve many benefits for athletes that include:
- Providing a quick source of energy
- Help burn more body fat to get lean
- Increase the metabolism
- Preserve lean muscle mass
So if any of you are having “problems” with cow’s milk then coconut milk is a great way to go. Even if you aren’t having problems then I’d still give it a try.
Train hard, help somebody and recover fast.

My husband and I have been lactose intolerant for years. The cramps, gas and other unpleasant side effects have led us to soy milk. I have heard good things about almond, hemp and rice milk. Soy works for us so I haven’t personal tried anything else. Lots of African Americans in particular are lactose intolerant and just think it’s normal. Nice website!
Am I able to buy this in the store as well or simply online?
This is a terrific post, but I was wondering how do I suscribe to the RSS feed?
